How to Convert M4V to MKV with Smart Work?

The another alternative is to do a dual conversion. First set up a nice MKV with all the bells and whistles for the HTPC, then do a M4V to MKV converter with just stereo and the burned-in forced subs were necessary to use for portable devices and road trips. I have been experimenting with that as well, looking for a smaller file size that still maintains decent quality on the biggest possible portable platform which would be the iPad. It would be nice to have a library of smaller MP4s to pull from for portable use. Heck if you can get a movie down to around 400 MB then you could put almost 40 movies on a 16GB microSD card to take with you!

Luckily it is not too bad to do encodes with the faster computers we have nowadays plus Handbrake's ability to do single-pass constant quality. With my i7-930 I can blast through a movie at DVD quality in about half an hour, or under 10 minutes for a smaller iPod type encode.

I was about to say, I chose MKV as my format of choice Becuase of a few things:

MKV support for expanded audio codecs (Lossless, DTS-HD, Dolby-TrueHD, FLAC)
Soft Sub support (So I can have the native language and subs, and/or English and no subs in one file)

You do give up native playback on any apple appliance unless you hack it as a downside, but I'm an android/XBMC device household, primarily because of my container choice above.

You should be able to have soft subs in mp4 using mp4 - Part 17 Timed Text. I'm not sure how well supported that is from encoders or players, but technically mp4 should handle soft subs just fine.

Technically MKV's real upside is is extensibility and its continued incorporation of new codecs and standards - MKV supports a massive array of audio and video codecs. Although its great that the container can, most players do not support the full capabilities of MKV. Most outside of VLC and MPC offer only MPEG2 and H264 video support.

As I know, the method to convert m4v to mp4 is to remove drm protection from iTunes videos. Since all iTunes movies and TV shows are encrypted with DRM protection, so we can't play m4v movies on other devices except Apple. Lucky to get a M4V Video Converterprogram from friend recommends. It is designed for all iTunes fans to remove DRM protection and convert videos from M4V to MP4, MPG, MOV, FLV, AVI, MP3, etc with all audio tracks, subtitles at faster speed without hampering the quality. After conversion, all videos will keep high quality and lossless. You can watch iTunes movies on Samsung TV and other devices in anytime. Just enjoy it freely.
