The venerable Adaptec AHA-2940UW PCI SCSI host adapter has been improved to allow all three ports to be used simultaneously. Long a sticky point, being limited to use of only two of the three connectors, the 32-bit 2940UW has been renamed the AHA-2940UW Pro to signify the new version. Depending on the application, the older 2940UW will suffice. But when use of three connectors is necessary, the new AHA-2940UW Pro is the choice for entry level servers and workstations not requiring the added performance of Ultra2 SCSI.

As a single channel SCSI host adapter, the maximum supported cable length of all connectors combined is limited to the shortest cable length standard for the types of SCSI being used. For example, if Fast Wide SCSI-2 devices are connected to one of the 68-pin connectors, the maximum cable length is 3 meters for 4 devices or 1.5 meters for 8 devices. If only the 50-pin SCSI-2 connector is used, the maximum cable length is 9 meters. But if both the 50-pin and 68-pin connectors are used, the maximum combined cable length is no more than 3 meters.

The AHA-2940UW host adapter is compatible with most PC servers and workstations. There are occasional compatibility problems in combination with SCSI host adapters from other manufacturers, such as the Diamond Multimedia Firemax.

Operating Systems Supported: Microsoft Windows 95/98 and Windows NT 4.0, Novell NetWare 3.12 and 4.X, SCO UnixWare 1.x and 2.x, IBM OS/2 2.x and 3.x, SCO Unix 3.2.x, and MS-DOS.

SCSI Supported: 8-bit SCSI-1 at 10 MB/second, 8-bit Fast SCSI-2 and Ultra SCSI at 20 MB/second, and 16-bit Fast Wide Ultra SCSI at 40 MB/second. 8-bit SCSI supports up to 7 devices and 16-bit SCSI supports up to 15 devices.

Maximum Cable Length: As a single SCSI bus, the total maximum cable length is limited to the maximum of the connectors used, i.e., SCSI-1 9-meters total, 16-bit Fast Wide SCSI 3-meters total; Ultra SCSI 1.5-meters (8 devices) or 3-meters (4 devices) total. A combination of SCSI types supports the smallest of the total cable lengths utilized as specified here.

Connectors: (1) External (thumbscrews) and (1) Internal high density 68-pin Fast Wide SCSI-2 or Ultra SCSI; (1) Internal SCSI-1 or SCSI-2 50-pin high density shared. All three connectors may be used simultaneously on 2940UW Pro. Maximum cable length is supported for each type of connector as follows:
